Health and Safe Operations
Health and Safety Management System
Our Health and Safety Management System is tailored to health care systems of the different countries and is therefore managed at our individual locations. Even in our smaller subsidiaries, we have established HSE departments with safety engineers who take care of Occupational Health & Safety of our office-based employees.
Depending on the country and the type of service offered by our various entities, standards and management systems vary. ISO 45001 and SCC are the most widely used certifications.
For example, in our factory in Nanjing, China, the certification scope of the currently prepared ISO45001:2018 management system covers the entire process of R&D, design and manufacturing of energy and environmental protection equipment. In Austria, we have a HSEQ management system which is certified according OHSAS 18001 and SCC which is valid for planning, erection, commissioning and servicing of industrial plants; design and manufacturing of special machinery, equipment and systems for electrical instrumentation, measurement and control engineering; energy technology, environment technology, modernisation, conversion and upgrading of thermal energy production plants, plant service and assembly.
Occupational Health Services
The occupational health services offered to workers are tailored to local requirements. This ranges from medical controls at each job, such as electrocardiogram, eye control, glycaemia, blood tests and psychological screenings at our O&G subsidiary in Romania, to annual health checks for our employees in our small office in Serbia. In locations with workshops or factories, occupational health services are particularly important. One example of this is the occupational health services we offer our employees in Nanjing, China:
- Notification of occupational hazards;
- Distribute PPE for occupationally hazardous positions;
- Establish personal health records;
- Conduct training on occupational health;
- Arrange all employees involved in occupational hazard positions to conduct occupational health examinations every year;
- Interview all employees involved in occupationally hazardous positions every year;
- Monitor the working environment of all employees involved in occupationally hazardous positions every year.
Training on H&S
Training and QHSE awareness is at the core of our Health and Safety management approach. The type and frequency of training conducted depends on the entity and the location. For example, in most European locations, such as in Germany, we are certified by SCCP, so training on HSE is required both internally and externally. New employees or employees starting new projects and visiting new sites must undergo additional training. A particularly effective method is used in Romania and Austria, where an HSSE training matrix is developed at the beginning of the year, which is then monitored and verified in inspections / audits / MWAs / Management Analysis. All trainings are associated with the training matrix and every trainings are confirmed with a certificate.
Many of our employees work in industrial environments, which are characterised by elevated levels of risk, and where just a moment of carelessness or a lack of attention to safety guidelines can have fatal consequences for the person in question or for others. We therefore attach particular importance to safe workplaces free from accidents. For example in 2019, we had zero fatalities and only 1 high-consequence work-related injury.
Christof Integrated Management System: Safety First
With our “Safety First” strategy, we aim to implement an integrated management system for all our entities. The target is zero incidents in offices, workshops and on-site. The HSE performance is regularly reviewed by management in order to continuously improve the aspects of safety, health protection and environmental protection in business practices.
