ReNOx: Utilising digestate, reducing nitrogen oxides
To achieve this, a novel treatment process has been developed that extracts ammonium from the digestate. Once extracted, this ammonium can be used for flue gas cleaning in industrial plants to reduce nitrogen oxides in emissions. As a result, there is a double benefit for the environment — less nitrate in the soil and fewer pollutants in industrial emissions. In addition, a further application includes the production of ammonium sulphate from recovered ammonia, which represents an environmentally friendly alternative to chemically produced fertiliser.
Building on these innovations, and following successful laboratory tests along with an implementation and upgrade phase, the project is now advancing to the technological upscaling stage towards an industrial plant. At this stage, the research and development teams of Christof Industries are carrying out all the engineering for the pilot plant in this project, in collaboration with the Montanuniversität Leoben.
